What are Pressure Garments?

Compression therapy for scar treatment utilizes garments manufactured according to the patient’s unique measurements and the location of scars on his or her body. The L-Tex fabric we use for these garments is knitted using the flat-knitting technique and resembles a honeycomb, combining resilience and ventilation while providing multidirectional stretch of the fabric. These characteristics help us create the best possible fit for the scarred body part for which pressure is required, as well as optimal comfort for the patient.

How Does the Pressure Garment Reduce Scarring?

Pressure garments help prevent the development of hypertrophic and keloid scars by applying mechanical pressure to the affected area. The pressure garment counteracts the thickening of the scar tissue and thus scarring is minimized.
Pressure garments also act to reduce the blood circulation to the scarred area which in turn reduces thickening of irregular tough scar tissue.
Pressure garments provide an additional layer of protection for sensitive, recovering skin from additional injury.

How are Pressure Garments Fitted?

1. The initial referral for pressure garments should be issues by your physician. It is imperative to begin treatment with pressure garments as soon as possible due to the fact that scars respond well to pressure during the first stages of their development, immediately after wounds have closed. At this stage, treatment is prophylactic, before the scar thickens. As a rule, pressure garments are not fitted on open wounds.

2. A trained therapist will take the measurements for your pressure garment, either in the hospital or in the community clinic. Because precision is required to achieve the best possible fit, measurements are taken without clothing on.

3. Measurement forms are sent to Comar.

4. Direct payment or funding by your health fund is regulated through a standardized administrative procedure, following which the measurement forms will be transferred for manufacture of the pressure garment.

5. Computer software generates a pattern based on the specifications detailed on the measurement form filled-out by your therapist. A uniquely fitted pressure garment is then manufactured in accordance with all of the therapist’s requirements.

6. The pressure garment is then shipped to your therapist, who will schedule an appointment for you to try on your pressure garment to verify a correct fit. It is your responsibility to report any discomfort caused by the garment; however, please keep in mind that not all discomfort requires modifications to the pressure garment. Your therapist has the knowledge and experience required to decide when modification of the pressure garment is necessary to improve comfort, without sacrificing the therapeutic effect.

7. If modifications are required, your therapist will send the pressure garment to Comar for the necessary alterations.

What to Expect from Pressure Garment Therapy?

The best results for scar treatment are achieved when the pressure garment is worn every day for the number of hours prescribed by your therapist, 23 hours per day in the majority of cases. The garment is taken off once a day to allow the patient to bathe, and launder the garment.
Prolonged wearing of the garment prevents scar thickening across joints, and thus counteracts limitations in range of motion associated with thick, rigid scars.
Many patients wearing pressure garments report relief from the itching that many times accompanies the scar healing process. Treatment with pressure garments may last 18 – 24 months.

Can the Scar Healing Process be Accelerated, and How?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to accelerate the natural healing process; however, you can prevent prolonging the treatment time by adhering to the schedule recommended to you by your treatment team.
Occasionally, your therapist or physician will recommend the use of silicone sheeting in conjunction with pressure therapy, to aid in scar treatment.

Will the Scar Disappear Completely?

A scar cannot be completely erased; however, in most cases the scar will appear lighter in color and be softer and suppler than it would have been without treatment, making the scar more aesthetic overall.

Instructions for Care

Pressure garments are fabricated from durable, pliable textile; however, prolonged daily wear weakens the elastic fibers, reducing the overall flexibility of the fabric. Garments should be replaced every 2-4 months to maintain maximal elasticity and effectiveness.
A number of simple guidelines can help you care for your garment correctly: Wear your pressure garment according to your OT’s instructions, hand-wash your pressure garment daily using a mild detergent and do not place in a dryer.
